Barrett Trucking / Vermont Rail Distribution Facility

On December 28, 2015 Vermont Rail Systems (VRS) purchased a 32 acre parcel of land north of Shelburne Village along Route 7 immediately west of Harbor Industries. VRS is currently constructing an intermodal facility at this site which will include but may not be limited to the following activities: salt storage, fuel containment, vehicle storage, heavy equipment storage, office building(s), etc. Based on the limited information provided by VRS, this project will likely drastically increase the amount of heavy truck traffic (trucking salt) at this location leading to potential public safety, traffic congestion, and noise related impacts. Furthermore, large salt storage operations directly adjacent to the LaPlatte River and near Lake Champlain present environmental concerns. VRS has indicated they have federal-preemption. If true, local zoning and land use regulations would not apply; neither would most state land use regulations. Shelburne officials have expressed concerns regarding this project and the impacts it could have on Shelburne. Please contact the Town Manager and/or the Selectboard if you have questions.
